"May You Live in Interesting Times"
Paolo Baratta, presidente della Biennale, definisce il valore dell'iniziativa che caratterizza la 58ª edizione dell'esposizione d'Arte con un enunciato che recita così: "una sfida a tutte le inclinazioni alla sovrasemplificazione". Il tema, pur sembrando molto generico, introduce uno degli aspetti oggetto di riflessioni e di provocazioni che riguardano lo sguardo visionario oltre il cosmopolitismo e la globalizzazione. Egli stesso si compiace del fatto che vede più del 50% di giovani sotto i 26 anni frequentare la Biennale in qualità di "partner visitatori". Ovvero, il visitatore, osservatore, come parte integrante della riuscita dell'esperienza, che provoca il significato dell'Arte. Infatti, esiste una fenomenologia che lo lega indissolubilmente al gusto della rivelazione e della reazione passivo-attiva, "seguendo il necessario spaesamento prima, l'impegno e la scoperta poi", come ci dice lo stesso Ralph Rugoff, curatore di quest'edizione.

Paolo Baratta, President of the Venice Biennale, defines as follows the value of the initiative that characterizes the 58th edition of the Art exhibition: "a decisive challenge to all oversimplifying attitudes". The theme, which may seem very generic, introduces one of the aspects that lead to reflections and provocations about the visionary view beyond cosmopolitanism and globalization. He is pleased in seeing more than 50% of young people, aged under 26, visiting the Biennale as "partner visitors". In other words: the visitor, the observer, as an integrating part of the success of the experience, the one who provokes the significance of Art. In fact, there is a phenomenology that binds him indissolubly to the taste for revelation and a passive-active reaction: "first, the necessary disorientation, then the involvement, followed by the discovery", as Ralph Rugoff, curator of this edition, explains.
